Short answer: There is no single best soap for body odor at a US drugstore, because each shelf is built for a different problem. Deodorant and antibacterial bars aim at underarm sweat odor, benzoyl peroxide washes are labeled for acne, charcoal and tea tree bars sell a deep-clean feel, whole-body deodorants target odor in specific spots, and perfumed washes mostly add scent. Persimmon soap, made for musty odor on the neck, chest and back, is sold online. Turn the package over first: a Drug Facts panel means an over-the-counter drug, while an ingredient list alone means a cosmetic.
In the US, the claims on the box decide how a product is regulated. According to FDA guidance whose content is current as of September 11, 2024, a product’s intended use makes it a cosmetic, a drug or both. You can see the difference on the back of the package:
Keep that distinction in mind; it is the fastest way to know what you are holding.
This is the classic body odor shelf, and it changed a decade ago. On September 6, 2016, the FDA published a final rule covering 19 active ingredients in over-the-counter consumer antiseptic washes; triclosan and triclocarban are the best known of them (FDA, Consumer Antiseptic Wash Final Rule Questions and Answers, checked October 12, 2026). The agency’s consumer page says the rule reaches hand soaps, bar soaps and body washes used with water, while hand sanitizers, wipes and antibacterial soaps used in health care settings fall outside it. The same page says the FDA has not seen enough evidence that nonprescription antibacterial soaps beat plain soap and water at preventing illness.
So today, a bar sold as antibacterial should name its active ingredient in a Drug Facts panel, while a “deodorant soap” with only an ingredient list is making a cosmetic claim. Designed for: sharp, sour odor in the underarms, groin and feet, where skin bacteria break down sweat. Suits: people whose odor peaks after exercise or a hot day. If these bars leave your skin tight, follow with a moisturizer.
These are over-the-counter drugs and carry Drug Facts. One benzoyl peroxide acne wash label we read on DailyMed, the National Library of Medicine’s drug label database, on October 12, 2026, lists acne as its use, tells new users to test a small area first, and warns that the product may bleach hair and dyed fabrics, including clothing and carpets. Online advice sometimes suggests these washes for body odor. That is not the use printed on the label, so ask a board-certified dermatologist before using one for anything else, and keep white towels for it if you do.
Designed for: acne on the face, chest and back. Suits: people buying for acne who are happy to follow the directions on the box.
These are usually sold as cosmetics, so expect an ingredient list. Tea tree appears as “Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil.” Charcoal bars are marketed for a “detox” or deep-clean feel; read that as a description of the experience, not a measured result. Designed for: people who like a brisk, herbal or squeaky-clean finish. Suits: oilier skin that tolerates essential oils. If your skin is reactive, patch test any bar with essential oils on a small area first.
A newer section of creams, sticks and sprays. The American Academy of Dermatology (page last updated May 16, 2025, read October 12, 2026) says that, despite the name, dermatologists advise against applying them all over; they suggest using them only where odor starts, which it lists as the armpits, feet and groin. The AAD adds that these products do not reduce sweating unless an aluminum ingredient appears on the label, and that fragranced products should stay off the groin, where scented formulas risk irritation and may cause a yeast infection. Designed for: odor in those specific spots. Suits: people who will read the directions closely and keep the product off sensitive areas.
The biggest shelf by far. A long list of scent ingredients can appear on a US label as the single word “Fragrance,” as the FDA’s fragrance guidance (content current as of February 28, 2022) confirms, so the box will not tell you exactly what makes up the smell. Designed for: lather and a pleasant smell. Suits: people who want to smell nice after a shower. Perfume sits on top of an odor rather than washing anything away, and layering a strong wash with a scented deodorant and cologne can clash.
Japanese persimmon soap is aimed at a different smell: the greasy, musty note linked to 2-nonenal, a compound that a 2001 Japanese study found in the body odor of people over 40 but not in younger adults (Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 2001). It sits in skin oil on the nape, behind the ears, across the chest and down the back, which is why our guide to matching soap to the cause of odor handles it separately from sweat.
You will not find it at the big chains: on October 12, 2026, the Walgreens site search showed no persimmon soap, and our store-by-store check has the rest. KAKIORA, sold online here, is a Japanese persimmon (kaki) extract bar in a soap-free base; six bars cost $69.75, and one-time orders carry a $3 flat shipping charge to US addresses from our UK facility. Bar or liquid is a separate decision; our bar versus body wash comparison covers it.
A new soap is a fair first step for ordinary odor. Book a visit with your doctor if the smell changes quickly or takes on a sweet, fishy, ammonia-like or bleach-like quality, or if sweat soaks through your clothes often enough to disrupt work or sleep. Skin that stays irritated or keeps breaking out after a product change is a job for a board-certified dermatologist.
It is designed for odor that skin bacteria produce from sweat, so it is a logical first try for underarms and feet. For musty odor on the neck and back, which comes from skin oil, it is aimed at the wrong target.
Because of the FDA’s September 6, 2016, final rule on consumer antiseptic washes, which covered triclosan, triclocarban and 17 other active ingredients.
The label we read lists acne as the use. Ask a board-certified dermatologist before using one elsewhere, and remember it can bleach fabric.
Not on the chain websites we checked in October 2026. Walmart.com lists persimmon soaps from marketplace sellers who ship to you; our store-by-store check has the dates and details.
