Persimmon soap is made with extract of the Japanese persimmon, or kaki. The tannin-rich juice of unripe persimmons, called kakishibu, has been used in Japan for generations (see our history of kakishibu). Many people use persimmon soap as an everyday wash because of nonenal, the compound linked to the stale, musty smell some people notice on their skin and pillowcases as they get older. So where do you buy it in Australia? On 7 October 2026 we searched the websites of the big chemist and supermarket chains and the main marketplaces.
On Chemist Warehouse's website, searches for "persimmon soap" and "kaki soap" both returned no results. Searching for "persimmon" on its own showed 8 products: perfumes, a nail polish and a diffuser, with no soap among them.
We could not check Priceline: its website showed us a security page instead of search results. A web search limited to Priceline's site found its general soap pages, but no persimmon soap. That is not a full picture of its range and says nothing about your local store's shelves, so check the website or ask in store.
Woolworths' online shop returned no results for "persimmon soap" or "kaki soap". A search for "persimmon" brought up 12 products, from fresh persimmons and candles to a toothpaste and pet accessories, but no persimmon soap.
Coles' search page did not load for us, so we could not check its online range directly. A web search limited to Coles' site showed fresh persimmons and ordinary soap bars, not a persimmon soap. If you want to be sure, check the Coles website or ask at your local store.
Marketplaces are where we did find persimmon soap. On Amazon.com.au, "persimmon soap" returned 11 results: several Japanese persimmon soaps and persimmon body washes from different brands and sellers, mixed in with unrelated soaps. "Kaki soap" returned 5 results, only one of them a persimmon soap. eBay's search page showed us an error, so we could not browse it, but a web search limited to ebay.com.au listed persimmon soap bars from several brands and from unbranded sellers. Listings change often and quality varies a lot. Before you buy:
If there is a Japanese or Korean grocer near you, it may be worth asking whether they carry persimmon soap. We did not check these shops for this guide, and stock varies from shop to shop.
KAKIORA Japanese persimmon soap is a gentle cleansing bar with Japanese persimmon (kaki) extract, coconut-derived cleansers and glycerin. The full ingredient list is on the product page. Used every day, it helps wash away the oily residue that carries the smell. We sell it on our own website and deliver to Australia. Orders ship within 2 working days, and the delivery estimate for your address is shown at checkout. Every order comes with our 60-day money-back promise.
KAKIORA prices in Australian dollars:
One bar lasts about two weeks with daily use, so a 6-bar subscription covers roughly 12 weeks. That works out at about A$15 a bar, or around A$7.50 a week, delivery included. When comparing soaps, look at the price per bar, not the pack price.
The musty smell tends to cling to fabric, so wash pillowcases, sheets and shirt collars often and let bedding air. Our guide to getting nonenal out of clothes, sheets and pillows has the full routine.
